World AIDS Day: Experts Advocate End To Structural Inequalities!

By Martha Igbiks

As the world marks this year’s AIDS Day December 1, medical experts have called for an end to structural inequalities that hinder proven solutions to HIV prevention and treatment.

Speaking at a town hall meeting and press conference in Akwa-Ibom State on this year’s theme: ” End Inequalitity, End AIDS Through Sustainable Financing”, representative of the Joint United Nations Programme for HIV/AIDS, USAIDS, Dr Idayat Uthman, tasked State Governments to engender a policy framework in addressing the social, political, economic and cultural inequalities that obstruct HIV response in Nigeria.

Dr Uthman maintained that until governments begin to provide inclusive social, economic and political growth, the fight to end AIDS by 2030 would be adversely hindered.

The USAIDS Officer, while decrying the heavy dependence of the HIV response in Nigeria on international resources, especially from the United States, which she said it’s not sustainable, called on State Governments to contribute to the response by procuring HIV test kits, anti-retroviral drugs and be committed to eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV and paediatric AIDS.

She equally commended Rivers State and Akwa-Ibom Governments for waving user fees in their States and urged other State Governments to take the cue to strengthen the HIV response in the country and consequently strengthen the fight to end AIDS by 2030.

Earlier, NACA’s South-South Zonal Coordinator, Dr Uduak Daniel said, the event was put together to discuss and proffer solutions to inequalities that exist in the zone and how State Governments through sustainable financing of HIV related activities can reduce new infections.

Dr Uduak stressed the need for the State Governments to be more involved in ensuring HIV- competent indigenes and urged People Living with HIV groups(PLHIV), partners and stakeholders within the south-south zone AIDS response to continue to advocate for effective mobilization of resources.

The World AIDS Day is celebrated annually on December 1 to show support for PLHIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS- related illnesses.
