Flood occasioned by torrential rains, Tuesday took over major streets and areas in Port-Harcourt capital of oil-rich Rivers State and adjourning Obio / Akpor Local Government Area.
The Rivers State Judiciary Complex along Azikiwe Road and the Headquarters of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Port- Harcourt along Aba – Port-Harcourt Road were all submerged in flood.
Thousands of residents of Port-Harcourt, especially those living in D/Line, Rumueme, Rumuomasi, and Oroworokwo communities as well as Elekahia and Rumuibekwe areas had pathetic tales to tell.
Those living on the bank of Ntawogba and Nwaja Creeks were also rendered homeless as they overflowed their banks and flood took over their homes.
Also submerged was the popular Port-Harcourt Mall, popularly known as SPAR, as well as the main entrances into Government House, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the State Secretariat Complex.
Major roads in the Old Port-Harcourt Township as well as the Port- Harcourt metropolis, comprising of Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas were not spared of the rampaging flood as pedestrians, commutters and motorists were stranded.
Also affected were Azikiwe Road, Sani Abacha Road, Ikwerre Road, Bank Road, Peter Odili Road ,Olu Obasanjo Road, Mgbuoba and some areas in Ada-George .
Some residents of the affected areas, who spoke with Journalists blamed the flood on the alleged blockage of the drainages and lack of Environmental Impact Assessment on some major projects and houses in the State capital and its environs.
