Hon.Solomon Eke,OBALGA Chairman.
The proposed Rumuokwurusi Youth Association Election in Obio / Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State is raising some dust as some concerned Youth of the community have kicked against the purported composition of an Electoral Committee (ELECO) said to be made up of supporters of a particular aspirant and the alleged meddlesomeness of the Council Chairman, Hon. Solomon Eke.
Representatives of the Youth, Emmanuel Weli and Prince Achor told Journalists at a media briefing in Port-Harcourt that the composition of the ELECO is in fragrant disobedience to a Consent Judgement Order to that effect by a Magistrate Court sitting in Bori.
In the said Consent Judgement Order which was sighted by our Correspondent, the Magistrate,E.E.Ogeh Esq; ordered interalia:
“That the 1st Respondent,Comrade Henry Ralph Amadi shall set up an Electoral Committee which shall take into consideration, the interest of all the parties herein and which shall be impartial to organize election for the Association on or before the 31st December,2020″
” That the election of Rumuokwurusi Youth Association shall be conducted within any of the Government Owned Primary Schools in Rumuokwurusi Town and shall by no reason whatsoever be conducted outside the community except by the order of this Court.”
” That no eligible member of the Association will be disenfranchised on the account of the novel Corona virus pandemic or unduly disqualified by the Electoral Committee to be set up by the Executive on reasons of personal grudge or issues with the Executive or for any other reasons whatsoever.”
” That the Registered Trustees of the RYA together with the Rumuokwurusi Council of Chiefs and Elders acting in the interest of peace, fairness and capturing the interest of all and for purpose of resolving and avoiding any issues of lopsided electioneering process, shall supervise the conduct of the election and ensure that it is conducted fairly and in accordance with the provisions of the RYA and their electoral guidelines.”
” That any of the parties hereto or member of RYA who conducts, behaves and carries himself in any manner that will not enable the realization or enablement of this settlement shall be severely dealt with by the Court in accordance with the relevant laws”.
These, Weli contended have been jettisoned by the Council boss and members of the constituted ELECO.
His words:” The Chairman who on January 4,2021, invited the four Paramount rulers that make up Rumuokwurusi and Rumuokwurusi Youth for a security meeting having heard of the petition written by Concerned Youth of Rumuokwurusi to the Commissioner of Police,Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Elimgbu Division captioned :’Looming Crisis/ Native War in Rumuokwurusi Town-A Clarion Call For Urgent Intervention’,held the meeting at the Council Hall.”
” Solomon Abel Eke having heard from the Paramount rulers and youth who informed him of the Court Order, promised the good people of Rumuokwurusi that he will not do anything against the order of the Court and that Rumuokwurusi Youth Association election will be held in compliance with the Court order”.
” We were however, taken aback when we were informed that the Chairman,Hon.Eke and the SIB Police personnel on Thursday, conducted a secret screening of aspirants for the election when the matter is still in Court and will be heard on January 12,2021.”
On his part,Prince Achor appealed to Governor Nyesome Wike, the State Commissioner of Police,Compol Joseph Mukan and heads of other security agencies in the State to call the Council Chairman and the said ELECO members to order as according to him, their action is capable of plunging the community into crisis.
“We are appalled that the Council Chairman never got back to us as he promised. We therefore, wish to use this medium to inform the general public that Solomon Eke is not from Rumuokwurusi community and cannot conduct an election for us but can serve as an observer or a supervisor at best.”
” We therefore call on the State Governor, the Commissioner of Police,Director of the Department of State Service and other relevant authorities to call the Chairman and his cronies to order and to desist from conducting any kangaroo election until all issues are first, properly resolved.
We will resist every attempt by the Chairman and his cronies to install his allies with the last drop of our blood,” he concluded.
Efforts to speak with Comrade Henry Ralph Amadi and the Council Chairman, Hon. Eke on the issue at press time, were abortive.
The Chairman also, did not respond to a message sent to him .
