An early evening rain on Tuesday, October 12, wrecked havoc in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The rain which swept through the sleepy community between 5 and 6.30pm deroofed several houses, rendered many families homeless also destroyed property estimated at millions of Naira. Several economic crops were also destroyed.
Residents of the community who spoke with our correspondent said the rain was strange as the destruction it left in its wake has never happened in the history of the people.
“What happened was strange. We have never experienced this type of situation before.This disaster is just too painful to bear”,a distraught victim said.
An opinion leader in the community, Pastor Gift Emeka Ejimadu appealed to the State Government, National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA) and well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of locals who are stranded at the moment.
“This is an unfortunate development. I call on the authorities to without delay, come to the aid of these locals who are stranded at the moment. This will give them a sense of belonging and in the meantime,assuage their loses,”Pastor Ejimadu appealed.
Officials of the State Government or the Local Government Area could not react to the development at press time.
