Operatives attached to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Unit of Edo State Police Command in Nigeria, have arrested a 25-year-old sales representative of a popular pharmaceutical company in the State, one Chikezie Precious for allegedly faking his own abduction.
The suspect who has been working with the pharmaceutical company for three years, was said to be owing the company some un-remitted money from sales of drug, to the tune of nine hundred thousand naira (N900,000.00.)
His attempt to make the company write off the debt, led him to planning and executing the self-kidnapping plot.
Having perfected the plot,he drove the company’s delivery vehicle to Auchi/Ewohimi/Agbor road, abandoned it at a spot, left the key on the driver’s seat and took a public transport to Benin city, where he lodged into an hotel at Ikpoba Hill area of the city.
Chikezie was said to have switched off his mobile phones and contacted a friend to call his company’s management to inform them that he had been kidnapped along Ewohimi/Agbor road.
On receiving the message, the company’s management reported the alleged kidnap at Igbanke Police Division in whose jurisdiction, the company’s vehicle was recovered.
His bubble however, burst when the matter was later transferred to the Anti-kidnapping and Cyber-crime Unit of the State Police Command where operatives deployed high-tech equipment and traced Chikezie to his hideout and arrested him.
In his confessional statement, he admitted to the crime which he said was a ploy for the company to write off his debt.
His words:”I owe my company over N900,000.00 and they have been disturbing me to pay back.”
“After too much stress, l decided to fake my kidnapping to see if they could write off the debt for me.”
“I lodged in the hotel at Ikpoba Hill, in Benin City, and asked my friend to call my boss to announce my kidnapping.”
On the whereabouts of his friend who made the call to his company, he said:”I really don’t know where he is right now. Maybe he has escaped.”
