President Buhari Appoints DIG Usman Akali Baba Acting Inspector General Of Police!

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), Usman Alkali Baba as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect.

Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi announced the President’s directive to State House correspondents this afternoon in Abuja,Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Recall that President Buhari had on February 4,2021, extended the tenure of IGP Mohammed Adamu whose tenure had elapsed by three months.

IGP Adamu had spent two months and three days out of the three month extension before the President decided to have a change of guards at the Force Headquarters.

Sources said the President’s action might not be unconnected with the spate of attacks in the South Eastern part of Nigeria in the last couple of days.

The well coordinated attacks came to the head when some armed men who Police authorities said were members of outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and fighters of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), torched and blew up parts of Imo State Police Headquarters and Correctional Centre in Owerri in the wee hours of Monday, April 5.

Cars, property estimated at millions of naira were destroyed while hundreds of detainees and prisoners were freed in the two- pronged attacks.

Usman Alkali was born on March 1, 1963. He hails from Geidam in Yobe State and has had meritorious years in the force.He has also served in various capacities such as DIG Force CID and was also the Force Secretary at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. He has served in various commands including Kaduna as the Deputy Commissioner, Administration; He was in FCT as the Deputy Commissioner, Investigation and was also in the staff college as a directing staff.

He served in Ilorin as an Area Commander. He was alsoalso second-in-command in Ebonyi as well as an Assistant Commissioner, CID in Kaduna and before then was DPO (Divisional Police Officer) in various places like Yola, Gombe, Kaduna, and Jos.

The new Acting IGP holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) Degree from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State 1997 and a BA (ED) Political Science from Bayero University, Kano State as well as Professional Courses/Workshop Institution.

He was a member of Course 22/2014 2014, National Defence College (NDC) and a member of the International Association of Police and also a fellow of the International War College.

He is married with children.
