Respite and justice have finally come the way of the family of murdered Jumia Delivery Agent- Chukwuma Eleje- as a High Court sitting in Port- Harcourt, capital of Rivers State Nigeria has sentenced his killer-Sodienye Mbatumukeke to death by hanging.
Mbatumukeke and his alleged accomplice, one Excel Divine Naabe had been standing trial on a two count charge of murder and armed robbery.
Delivering judgement on the matter on Monday, Justice Chigozie Igwe, held that the first defendant , Mbatumukeke was guilty of the charges as the prosecution has proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt.
Justice Igwe who relied on section 391(1)(A),367(1)(2) and 101(A) of the Criminal Act of Nigeria as amended in the Nigerian Constitution, said the defendant was a hardened criminal who deserves to die for the gruesome murder of the delivery agent.
He therefore, sentenced him to death by hanging or by firing squad or any other method deemed necessary by the State Governor.
Justice Igwe however, discharged and acquitted Naabe for lack of convincing evidence.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Ibiene Mbano said the judgement was sound as it will serve a deterrent to other criminal minded persons who might be tempted to indulge in such crimes in the future.
But the convict’s counsel, Chinedu Ugu expressed reservations about the judgement. He said his client has directed that the matter be appealed.
Speaking with Journalists, Blessing Chukwuma Eleje, wife of the slain delivery agent thanked the authorities for the deligent prosecution of the matter, adding that although things have not been easy easy with her family since the murder of their breadwinner, the judgement was a morale booster.
It will be recalled that the late Eleje was murdered on March 25,2017 at the Ada George axis of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State when he went to deliver an iPhone and other items that were ordered online by the convict.
