Gunmen, Tuesday, killed a Police Sergeant during an attack on the Divisional Police Station, Kolo, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The gunmen also overan and ransacked the Station for arms, ammunition and carted away the service rifle of the deceased and other rifles from the armoury.
It was learnt that the invaders who were six in number reportedly opened fire on a Police team conducting stop-and-search of vehicles in front of the Police station.
Eyewitness said three policemen were on duty when the gunmen struck. They tried to return the firepower, but had to scamper for safety as they were outnumbered by the rampaging gunmen.
It was further learnt that the late officer was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but later gave up the ghost.
The authorities, in the absence of a substantive Commissioner of Police have after consultation with the Zonal Headquarters, deployed Police tactical squads, comprising Operation Puff Adder and the Anti-cultism Units to the area.
The image maker of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the Command has launched an investigation into the unfortunate incident.
In the meantime, the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP),Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the posting of Compol Ben Nebolisa Okolo to Bayelsa State as the new Commissioner of Police. He takes over from Echeng E. Echeng, who was redeployed to Anambra State following spate of insecurity in the State.
Compol Okolo had before his deployment, served as Deputy- Commissioner of Police, Force Intelligence Unit, Special Fraud Unit and Head of the IGP Monitoring Team.
